                                                    Dr Clare Corbould is an Associate Professor at Melbourne’s Deakin University, specialising in African American history from slavery to freedom to Black Lives Matter. Her first book, Becoming African Americans, examined Black Americans’ attachments to Africa during the Roaring Twenties. Published by Harvard University Press, it won a Victorian Premier’s Prize and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Prize. Corbould’s forthcoming book, co-authored with Michael McDonnell, examines African Americans’ perspectives on the nation’s founding ideals from 1776 to the present. Corbould frequently contributes to Australian media. She is Associate Head of School (Research) in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Deputy Director of Deakin’s Centre for Contemporary Histories.
